Discounted Travel Cards

War Widows/Widowers HM Forces Railcard

This information also applies to those in receipt War Widows/ers Pension or AFCS 2005 monthly payments and a Forces Family Pension.

It can be obtained through the Royal British Legion Pensions Department. This can be used as a family railcard but you can also travel alone. If you are applying for the first time then you must send a signed letter giving:

  • Your full name
  • Your spouse's service number
  • Your War Widow(er)'s Pension number
  • Your date of birth
  • A passport photo signed on the reverse
  • A cheque for £2.50 made payable to "Royal British Legion Rail cards"

Children can get discounted travel whilst travelling with you using your Railcard between the ages of 5 - 15 (up to 4 children on one card). After 15 they would be eligible for their own Railcard and for as long as they continue in full time education.

Cards can be renewed by sending a cheque for £2.50 together with the NON-photo section of the expiring card.

War Widows Senior Railcard

This gives a £6.00 reduction off the Senior Rail Card it is available to those aged 60 or over who are only in receipt of a War Widows Pension

This can be obtained for the first time or renewed through National Express Business Travel  08457 225125

Please have your debit or credit card ready to make your payment. If you prefer to pay by cheque, call the above number and you will be given a reference number the write to: National Express Travel Services, PO Box 664, Newcastle upon Tyne , NE99 1PE enclosing a cheque made payable to National Express and quoting the reference number.

 

Veterans Concessionary Travel Scheme (VCTS)

War Widows/ers, AFCS War Widows and recognised partners of any age, in receipt of ongoing payments from the War Pension Scheme or the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme may apply for a VCTS Oyster Photo Card which entitles the bearer to free travel at any time in London on the bus, tube, Docklands Light Railway and London Overground Services. There are some concessions on travel on mainline rail services just outside the Greater London Zone. This concession is available to those under 60 living in London and of any age throughout the United Kingdom. Those of 60 or over living in London can apply for a Freedom Pass.

Qualifying parents can apply for a VCTS card for dependent children.

  • They will then require  A photocopy of your Awards Notification or annual uprating letter from the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency (SPVA) showing your entitlement to an ongoing payment under the War Pensions Scheme or Armed Forces Compensation Scheme
  • A passport size photo
